Leverage and margin

Leverage lets a trader open a position larger than the margin deposited, so gains and losses are based on the full size of the position.

Market volatility and gaps

Prices can move quickly, and may jump from one level to another without trading in between, so orders may be filled at a different price than requested.

Liquidity

In some market conditions there may be few buyers or sellers, which can make it harder to open or close a position at the expected price.

Over-the-counter (OTC) / counterparty risk

Over-the-counter products are not traded on a public exchange, so the client depends on the other party to the trade meeting its obligations.

Currency risk

When an account or an instrument is in a different currency, changes in exchange rates can affect the value of positions, profits and losses.

Technology, platform and internet risks

Online trading relies on software, hardware and internet connections, any of which can fail, slow down or be interrupted.

Taxation
